You could say the buzz surrounding Lucasfilm’s next cinematic foray has been given a solid boost of confidence by the man who put together the Marvel Cinematic Universe. At the Hall H stage in San Diego for Comic-Con, Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, made time during his own high-profile presentation to offer a glowing review of Star Wars: Starfighter.
Feige was there to make some big MCU announcements of his own, not least the news that Ryan Gosling is set to be Ghost Rider in 2028. But he also found occasion to talk about a galaxy far, far away. Having already put in a viewing of Shawn Levy’s highly anticipated film, the Marvel chief was on hand to give it his first major industry stamp of approval.
In front of the crowd, Feige was open about what he thought of Levy’s space opus.
“I don’t want to brag, but I have been fortunate to see Star Wars: Starfighter,” Feige said. “And being a Star Wars nerd – or more of one than a Marvel nerd. Is that true? No, it isn’t. It is what it is. It’s awesome. You get all the Star Wars feels from it and something new as well.”
He singled out Gosling in particular for how he brings a certain charisma to the part, which in turn lifts the whole narrative. For Lucasfilm, the movie is an important tentpole. Levy has finished up with production after stints in Italy and elsewhere, and with the studio wanting to put an original mark on the screen, this project is meant to see if audiences are ready for a story that does not just rehash the old Skywalker continuity.
Having someone of Feige’s stature put his name to such a unique mix of nostalgia and new energy only adds to the fever pitch of anticipation as the film heads toward its theatrical date.
One does not often see the head of a Disney subsidiary so vocally back another’s franchise play. Feige’s unscripted praise goes some way to show the good relations between the likes of Shawn Levy and the Marvel inner circle. It is also a sign that Star Wars: Starfighter may well be the kind of cinema magic Lucasfilm has been after.
