Detective Hole is a hit on Netflix, a Norwegian crime drama and thriller series. The nine episodes follow an investigation into a serial killer, but is the production inspired by a real case?
Is Detective Hole based on a true story?
Detective Hole is not based on a true story. In fact, the Netflix series is an adaptation of the Harry Hole detective novels written by Norwegian author Jo Nesbø, primarily the fifth book, “The Devil’s Star.” What’s most interesting is that Jo Nesbø is involved in the production as the showrunner for Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole. “It’s been a rollercoaster of emotions. I really didn’t know what I was getting myself into, since there isn’t really a tradition of having showrunners on Norwegian TV series. So it was new to me, but also to the directors, and it took some time for us to get used to it,” the author told Deadline.
Regarding Jo Nesbø’s adaptation of his own books for the Netflix series, he explained that “there’s no need to be faithful—it’s a different story. We don’t feel obligated to please readers in any way. Because of my narrative style, the audience will know it’s the same DNA. I’m not recreating the novel.”
What is the story of Detective Hole?
In Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole, a detective haunted by his past discovers that his biggest rival at the police station is involved in a police corruption scheme, while at the same time a serial killer is on the loose in the city. We follow Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole (Tobias Santelmann), who stands out equally for his genius and his difficult temperament. Five years after suffering a terrible loss, Hole must face his demons when a series of murders—frighteningly connected to one another (and to his past)—plague Oslo. As he investigates the maniac’s trail, he discovers that his old rival, Tom Waaler (Joel Kinnaman) is involved in a dirty police corruption scheme.
