Gopichand is packing away the guns and grabbing a sword at last. After years of going all out after “mass” hits that mostly fell flat, the Macho Star is all in on ‘Kalagni‘ – a high-risk 7th century epic that has everyone in the industry talking. It’s a massive gamble, but with The Ghazi Attack director Sankalp Reddy at the helm, this isn’t your run of the mill period drama; it’s a full blown revisionist history experiment that just wrapped up a gruelling 25-day night shoot in Hyderabad.
The ‘Shoola’ Reject and the Secret of the 7th Century
Kalagni (The Fire of Time) is the title that finally stuck after the team ditched the previous Shoola, which was reported to be far too generic. People close to Sankalp Reddy say that the script is obsessed with a “forgotten episode” in Indian history and is shifting away from the 18th-century rebellions we’ve seen all over the place lately. Instead, we’re talking a genre-bending epic that shoves together mythology with the documented warfare of the 7th century. Right in the middle of all this is a “one-off never-seen-before” night-time finale that Venkat Master came up with – one that allegedly blew a sizeable chunk of the massive budget.
The “Real” vs The “Mythical”
This isn’t just a costume change for Gopichand. This is a desperate attempt to hop on the “Pan-India” bandwagon before it’s too late. By teaming with Ritika Nayak (who is finally getting the recognition she deserves after Ashoka Vanamlo Arjuna Kalyanam) and using Anudeep Dev’s score to get that tribal-mass vibe going, producer Srinivasaa Chitturi is positioning this as a prestige project for sure.
The next move now? A solo release window to avoid getting trampled by the summer blockbuster duos like Jailer 2 or Peddi. They need to get a clean three week run with word of mouth doing the rest. For a star that hasn’t had a proper blockbuster in ages, Kalagni is make or break: can Sankalp Reddy’s technical wizardry turn Gopichand into a proper movie star, or is this just another expensive period piece heading for the graveyard of OTT?
